Police Station Representation

If arrested, a young person aged 16 or younger will have to be accompanied by an ‘appropriate adult’ whilst at the police station and during in the interview process. The appropriate adult should be independent of the allegation and able to effectually look after the interests of the young person whilst they are detained. The parent or guardian often takes on this role.

In this situation, the appropriate adult and the young person are fully entitled to ask for free legal advice. At Mowbray City Advocates, a youth offence specialist will be available 24/7 to provide representation at the police station.

Youth Court Representation

If the police decide to charge or summons a young person they will attend a Youth Court (unless charged with an adult or if the offence is of a very serious nature). Youth Courts deal exclusively with people less than 18 years of age.

Legal Aid

Public funding at the Youth Court requires the submission of an application form which we can take you through. Legal Aid is almost always granted in Youth Court cases to cover the costs of your defence.
